In 1503, Leonardo da Vinci stretched a wooden panel to receive the now-iconic Mona Lisa. Meanwhile, Venice’s shimmering lagoons were inspiring Giovanni Bellini and Titian to abandon temperamental wood for tightly stretched linen canvas. But what made these supports — wood, canvas, or modern acrylic panels — so critical to paint chemistry? The answer lies in the subtle interplay of absorbency, movement, sizing, and adhesion. Today, we peel back the painted surface to reveal the science and spectacle of the artist's foundation.

The Chemistry: Why Grounds Matter

Paint is fundamentally a mixture of pigment and binder, but without the right surface, even the best binder fails. Absorbency governs how much paint soaks in; too much, and colors sink, too little, and adhesion fails. Movement — particularly of flexible supports like canvas — poses a challenge, as natural fibers expand/contract with humidity, risking cracks. Sizing isolates the absorbent support, preventing paint from drawing in impurities or oils that could cause degradation. Finally, adhesion links all these properties, ensuring the ground bonds chemically and physically with the support and the subsequent paint layer.

Short History: From Gesso to Acrylics

The earliest gesso grounds (a glue/chalk mixture) can be traced to 13th-century Italian panel painting, prized for their luminous, absorbent bases. With the rise of oil painting in the North, linen canvas overtook panels, and gelatin-based sizing became standard (National Gallery). Fast-forward to the 20th century, and polymer-based acrylic primers entered studios, offering greater flexibility and resilience (Tate Conservation). Each turning point solved a specific chemical or physical challenge in adhesion, absorbency, or movement control.

Studio Application: Workflow

  1. Select support (canvas, panel, etc.).
  2. Apply sizing (rabbit-skin glue for tempera, acrylic medium for modern). Allow to dry fully — 6–24 hours (Getty Conservation).
  3. Apply ground (traditional gesso or acrylic primer), usually 2–4 coats, with light sanding between. Drying/curing: 1–4 hours per coat for acrylic, 8+ hours for glue/chalk gesso (Getty).
  4. Test absorbency — sprinkle a few drops of water; it should bead up (low absorbency) or soak slowly (for absorbent grounds).

Timing, Process Control, and Conservation Evidence

Proper curing* is vital. Binders in each layer need to polymerize, gel, or coalesce. Rushing the process — painting on damp size, for example — risks delamination or efflorescence (white bloom). Modern acrylic grounds can be force-dried (low heat, ventilation); traditional glue-based systems should air-cure slowly to prevent cracks.

Laboratory analyses (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, cross-section microscopy) reveal that improperly cured grounds are a major cause of 18th–19th century "ground failure" — craquelure, ground separation, or oil acidity causing embrittlement (Tate Conservation).
