I have recently decided to stick to black and white for a while and try to master tonal imagery. There are quite a few hyperrealist artists that have ventured this very same way that are a great influence to me. Collectively they use a wide variety of media to portray their work from graphite to charcoal and acrylics to oils and all to great effect. Black and white is an interesting view of the world that we don't usually see. Until the invention of the camera, the closest anyone would come to see the world in black and white would be in very low light and moonlight. This did not stop artists creating monochromatic works. Look at Da Vinci's drawings for example. Black and white imagery emphasises the texture, contrast, light and shadow within a piece. Allowing the form of the object to appear three-dimensional when of course it is flat. Tonal value and tonal relationships within an artwork are essential elements that contribute towards the illusion of reality, depth and form. W...
